Theatrical Project: Sally & FeltMakers Award Entry 2024: Hope
Sally inspired by vivid drag makeup, particularly the exaggerated lips and eyes. I love the blend of masculine and feminine elements—the bowler hat paired with the pretty, fluttery feather eyes and plump, juicy lips. The addition of the dangling cigarette adds another layer to the character. The cabaret compère describes everyone as "beautiful," and I wanted to capture that duality: on the surface, everything appears glamorous and alluring, but beneath it lies something darker and more sinister, much like the atmosphere of 1930s Berlin.
Hope is inspired by the multiple ways in which individuals can become trapped in the cycle of poverty, reflecting the struggle to escape homelessness. Drawing from Ken Loach’s 1966 docudrama Cathy Come Home — which exposed Britain’s housing crisis and helped launch Shelter — the design highlights the economic, social, and psychological barriers that persist today.
